Residents of the Western Isles of Scotland have given strong support to plans to turn the island of Harris into Scotland's third national park.

Of 1,450 ballot papers circulated to islanders 730 people in favour of the idea. Just over 300 residents gave the plan the thumbs down.

Those supporting the plan said it would create jobs and attract new residents.

It will be up to the Scottish government to now decide if the Islanders wish is given practical help.

Almost ten years ago the Celtic League was an enthusiastic supporter of the concept of National Parks in Scotland and we contributed to the various stages of the consultation at that time.
