NEWS FROM CELTIC LEAGUE The Scottish Government has pledged £2 million funding towards the creation of a new online Gaelic dictionary. The digital archive will contain over 30 million words and is a partnership that is being managed by Skye's Gaelic language centre Sabhal Mor Ostaig UHI, in association with Aberdeen, Glasgow, Strathclyde and Edinburgh Universities. The project - Faclair na Gaidhlig - has already been running for a number of years with the aim of producing a historical dictionary of Gaelic that will be comparable in value and status to those that currently exist in the English and Scots languages. Over the years the project has been funded by a number of organisations including the Arts and Humanities Research Council and the Economic and Social Research Council. Bord na Gaidhlig has been providing £75 000 a year towards the project since 2004, but despite the extra funding boost the Faclair na Gaidhlig is not expected to be completed for a number of years yet. In response to the funding pledge First Minister of Scotland, Alex Salmond, said: We're committed to working with a range of other public bodies to create a secure future for the Gaelic language. The dictionary initiative will play an important part in that work and I'm delighted that this extra funding has been identified to drive forward the project. Link:
