MONITORING for radioactive particles got under way this week on beaches along the coast of South West Scotland near Kirkcudbright.

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) will undertake tests on beaches near Goat Well Bay for particles that may have been washed across the Solway Firth from the Sellafield nuclear plant in Cumbria. A further beach at Southerness is also due to be tested under the £100,000 programme funded by the Nuclear Decommissioning Agency and Sellafield Ltd.

The work will be carried out by SEPA and England's Environment Agency using a specialist vehicle that has previously been used successfully to monitor beaches and locate radioactive particles near the Dounreay plant in Caithness, North Scotland.

Suggestions by the Celtic League that the Isle of Man government should ask the United Kingdom to fund similar tests on beaches beaches on the Northern coasts of the Isle of Man were rejected (see related articles below) by the Manx government which seems to have a more relaxed approach to dangers posed.
