NEWS FROM THE CELTIC LEAGUE RPII/SELLAFIELD FRIENDLY AGREEMENT QUERIED The Celtic League has written to the RPII querying the value of the `friendly agreement' it has with Sellafield. The move follows the adoption of a resolution on the issue at the 2012 Celtic League AGM. Chief Executive
RPII
Ann McGarry
3 Clonskeagh Square,
Dublin 14
Ireland 06/01/13 Dear Ms McGarry, At its AGM held in Brittany in October 2012, the Celtic League adopted the following resolution: Aware that via a`friendly agreement' both Radiological Protection Institute of Ireland and An Garda Síochána are allowed access to the Sellafield site expresses its concern that neither body has pressed the UK about the discovery of almost 400 radioactive particles on beaches (monitored by the UK) in the north west Irish sea or indeed the possible spread of such contaminated material beyond the zone currently monitored. It would be useful if you could outline the value of the `agreement' referred to above and what tangible benefit Ireland has accrued from it. I feel sure the RPII will agree that a source for occasional `spikes' in radioactivity levels related to the UK nuclear industry is caused by the remobilisation of sediment in the Irish sea. That being the case the discovery of so many significant radioactive particles (albeit at this stage confined to the north east Irish Sea) must surely be a cause for concern.
