Developments in relation to seeking the return of various historic vartefacts to the Celtic countries have been positive over the past year. This was the message from the Celtic League General Secretary (GS), Rhisiart Tal-e-bot, to the organisations annual conference, held last weekend in Dublin.

The GS said that the decision of a newspaper on the Isle of Man to launch a campaign for the return to Mannin of the medieval manuscript The Chronicles of the Kings of Man and the Isles had been heartening, as was the subsequent support for the initiative voiced by the Tynwald. The Chronicles are currently deposited in the British Library.

He also welcomed efforts by the Scottish government to publicise its desire to see the Lewis Chessmen returned to Scotland from the British Museum

However, he said the failure of the Manx and Scottish administrations to make common cause over the issue was disappointing.

It was agreed the Celtic League would continue its policy (agreed at its 1990 AGM) of withholding the copyright issue of Carn it is required to deposit with the British Library (under the Copyright and Library Act 1911). The League also endorsed its commitment to keep the artefacts recovery campaigns a live issue.
