IRELAND AND THE UNITED KINGDOM CRITICISED AGAIN ON RENDITION
Both the United Kingdom and Ireland have been criticised for the manner in which they have pursued allegations of rendition through their territory at separate sessions of the United Nations

Both the United Kingdom and Ireland have been criticised for the manner in which they have pursued allegations of rendition through their territory at separate sessions of the United Nations Human Rights Committee meeting in Geneva last month.

In relation to Ireland the UN HRC said:

"The State party should establish a regime for the control of suspicious flights and ensure that all allegations of so-called renditions are publicly investigated."

The Celtic League lodged a formal complaint in 2004 with An Garda Síochána at Shannon about alleged rendition flights but their subsequent enquiries were fruitless.

Meanwhile rendition flights via the United Kingdom, also the subject of formal complaint in 2004 by the League to Police in Scotland, have also been criticised. The UN HRC say in the concluding observations of their 93rd session - United Kingdom:

"The State party should investigate allegations related to transit through its territory of rendition flights and establish an inspection system to ensure that its airports are not used for such purposes."
