CELTIC LEAGUE - PRESS INFORMATION

TREATMENT OF BRETON PRISONER IS UNFAIR SAYS LEAGUE

The Secretary General of the Celtic League, Rhisiart Tal-e-bot, has called on the French Justice Minister to end the unfair treatment of a Breton detainee who has been effectively tried twice for the same crime.

The circumstances of the Breton prisoner, Kristian Geogeault, were considered at the Leagues annual meeting in Brittany last weekend and a resolution incorporating the Leagues concerns was adopted.

The Secretary General's correspondence (in both English and French is set out below):

"Pascal CLÉMENT Ministère de la justice 13, place Vendôme 75042 Paris Cedex 01 +33 1 44 77 60 60

I am writing to inform you of the resolution that was passed unanimously at our 2006 AGM in Landerne/Landerneau in Breizh/Brittany last week and to request that the matter be look into urgently. The resolution was as follows:

'This AGM calls for the immediate release of Kristian Geogeault, given the fact that he has been tried twice for the same crime (on March 26 th 2004 and June 29th 2005) and taking into consideration the time already served.'

Kritian Geogeault is imprisoned at:

Kristian Georgeault n°20533 Cellule OG15 Centre de détention - Kerbrient BZH-56275 PLANVOUR

Geogeault was on provisional detention from 6th May 2000 until his trial on the 26th March 2004. Geogeault, among others, was tried in Paris in a special court that was specially set up for the purpose. At this court Geogeault was sentenced to 11 years imprisonment. However, Geogeault was then later put on trial again on 29th June 2005 in Breizh/Brittany and was there sentenced to 6 years imprisonment.

Taking into consideration the fact that French law does not permit persons to be tried for the same offence and the time already served by Geogeault (including his 4 years provisional detention), we believe that he should be immediately released in line with our resolution above.

We look forward to hearing your comments on this matter.

Yours sincerely

Rhisiart Tal-e-bot General Secretary"

"Mr Le Ministre de la Justice Pascal CLÉMENT Ministère de la justice 13, place Vendôme 75042 Paris Cedex 01 +33 1 44 77 60 60

Mr le Ministre de la Justice,

Obj. Kritian Georgeault - Prisonier Breton

Etant donné que la loi française ne permet pas le jugement à plusieurs reprises d'une personne pour le même crime;

Etant donné que Georgeault a déjà servi la peine requise (en incluant les 4 ans de détention provisoire) ;

En accord avec la résolution ci-dessus mentionnée;

In addition to considering and expressing concern about the case of Kristian Geogeault the League meeting also considered the plight of other Breton detainees, those imprisoned in Ireland and also Basque prisoners jailed in Spain and France.

The meeting was addressed on the Sunday by a spokesperson from Skoazell Vreizh (the Breton political prisoners support group) and National branches were urged to continue to be active in support of prisoners rights.
