NEWS FROM THE CELTIC LEAGUE Manx delegates to the Celtic League AGM in Dublin last weekend (10-12th April) moved a three section resolution on seabed rights (the text of the motion is set below): ?This AGM: a) calls upon the Isle of Man Government to assert its sovereign rights to territorial and seabed rights to the median line with neighbouring jurisdictions in accordance with the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) b) Condemns successive UK governments for consistently abusing Manx seabed and territorial rights. c) This AGM agrees that the Celtic League will, as a recognised UN NGO, seek clarification upon the legality of taking hydrocarbon or any other resource from one jurisdiction's geological territory, without lawful agreement, by an operation in another jurisdiction by the process known as ?fracking?.? This week sea fisheries issues have been very much to the fore with Ministers arguing that their controversial onshore silt dumping proposal must go ahead as to dump contaminated silt at sea is unthinkable. There is general support within the community for maintaining our seabed in pristine condition and indeed the Isle of Man government has introduced marine conservation zones around our coasts. How much better it would be if the Isle of Man were to control and manage its territorial sea area (inline with accepted International norms) out to the median line. The Isle of Man gets nothing from the United Kingdom government and opposition parties but ill will at present. We should assert our rights if necessary via International law stop their illegal occupation of seabed which rightly belongs to the Manx people. The resolution received unanimous support from all delegates.
