NEWS FROM THE CELTIC LEAGUE The remaining live nuclear reactor at Wylfa power station on Anglesey has been shut-down after problems came to light during reactor refuelling. The plants operators say the decision to ?shut-down? was a ?conservative decision? taken whilst they ?investigate? the problem. Reactor No 2 at Wylfa stopped operating in 2013 and the remaining reactor (No 1) was due to continue operating until the end of 2015. The Power plant was originally due to close in 2010 but was given an operating extension. The Celtic League opposed the extension of the power station beyond 2010 although concerns were dismissed at the time by the UK government and nuclear regulators. The plant has been subject to numerous shutdowns and accidents over the years and has operated now for over 40 years. It is well past its safe operating life. There was a critical safety appraisal of the Plant by the independent nuclear consultants Large and Associates following a shut down in 2000 and the decision to restart the reactors in August 2001 was controversial.
