NEWS FROM THE CELTIC LEAGUE The Manx Nationalist Party, Mec Vannin, has condemned plans by the Manx Government to close main Post Offices in Douglas and Ramsey and franchise them out to a private sector retail business. At its monthly meeting on Monday 27th November the party approved the following motion: ? Mec Vannin views the decision of government to close major Post Office retail facilities in Douglas and Ramsey with concern. Both facilities are integral to both the social and commercial cohesion of the areas they serve and the idea that they can some how be accommodated in nearby private sector retail premises beggars? belief. The underhand manner in which this decision was made also gives cause for concern as both staff (their Unions) and the public were taken by surprise at the announcement. This latest Post Office debacle is just the latest of a series of privatisations by government of sections of the public infrastructure which augur ill in terms of service provision to the public.? There has been widespread condemnation of the government proposals which are part of a relentless drive by the present Manx administration to privatise publicly provided essential services. In Ramsey after the announcement was made a large crowd gathered at the Local Council offices and since then a public meeting has been held which attracted between 500-600 people. Trade Unions on the Island have also attacked the Post Office privatisation plan.
