Ireland Dear Ms McGarry, I was pleased to receive recently from your colleague Marie Kelly a press release and copy of the very detailed report drawn up for the RPII on the risks posed to Ireland by proposed new power plants in the United Kingdom. As indicated above we note the report is quite copious but are unclear from the sources referenced if it paid due cognisance to the 2011 report by the UK HMI (Nuclear Installations) on the Implications of the Japanese Tsunami for the UK Nuclear Industry? That report in its conclusions set out a number of recommendations (both domestic and international) that the UK government and industry should endeavour to meet to ensure reasonably practicable improvements to the safety of the UK nuclear industry. I feel you would agree that the only way any risks posed to Ireland can be fully and properly assessed is if the UK government are compliant with their own safety agencies best practice and if these in turn are subject to international oversight. Although we have looked at the United Kingdom HMI's subsequent update in 2012 we are unclear from this if the United Kingdom government and nuclear industry confirmed its acceptance and implementation of these recommendations without equivocation or caveat. We are currently seeking clarification on this point from the HMI's Office. I would be grateful if you could clarify the question posed in paragraph 2 above. In the meantime we will post your release and the link to the substantive report on our web-site. Yours sincerely J B Moffatt (Mr)
