The Celtic League is pressing newly appointed Taoiseach, Brian Cowen, to take a more distinctive stance on the controversial Corrib Gas Pipeline/Refinery project than his predecessor. The League have also reaffirmed their support for local community opposition to the current plans as espoused by the 'Shell to Sea' group.

In a related development the legal basis of the project will be discussed by the EU Parliament Petitions committee this week - details about evidence to be provided at the hearing by Shell to Sea can be found at:

"Dear Brian Cowen

Corrib Gas Project, County Mayo

Following your appointment as the new Taoiseach, the Celtic League would like to ascertain what your views are regarding the Corrib gas terminal and pipeline project and whether they differ in any way from your predecessor, Bertie Ahern, on this issue.

We are aware that you were the Minister for Energy in the early 1990's and we would consequently appreciate your own expert and 'insider' opinion on this matter. The Celtic League agree with the Shell to Sea campaign group in that we think the Corrib Gas Project is best erected off shore, which in our opinion will minimize the safety and environmental risks inherent to the project. In addition, we believe that any development should have been undertaken with the full consultation of the people of the Erris community.

If you disagree with us or believe that other options are still available, we would sincerely like to hear from you.

Yours sincerely

Rhisiart Tal-e-bot General Secretary"
