NEWS FROM THE CELTIC LEAGUE Last week we described what we saw as ?extremely positive and welcome? news in relation to the spate of burglaries that have bedevilled the Isle of Man since January. The Home Affairs Minister had said in correspondence to the League: ?With regard to the spate of recent burglaries, I am pleased to report that significant progress has been made in this area and it is likely that we have successfully disrupted these burglars.? The extremely confident tone of the Minister's statement seemed to indicate arrests might be imminent which would have been a relief to an Island community not used to this level of trauma from a particularly intrusive crime. However, this week with still no arrests in sight the full extent of the hitherto unrevealed crime wave has been publicised. A total of 68 burglaries (plus apparently other unrelated burglaries) have taken place netting the robbery gang over £160,000, and the gang is still at large. The level of burglaries exceeds a similar pattern of crime of this type that we reported on which had occurred in North Wales and it is certainly unprecedented in the Isle of Man. Crime Spree in North Wales Matches Manx Experience Meanwhile this week the Minister was preoccupied with pushing a Bill to do with war memorial preservation through the house. The monuments legislation issue is no doubt laudable but we would suggest a less stretched colleague Minister could take on that role leaving Mr. Watterson as Home Affairs Minister to concentrate on the crime epidemic on his doorstep!
