BBC National Chorus of Wales is joining forces with Orchestre Symphonique de Bretagne for the first time, to perform in the newly opened concert hall Couvent des Jacobins in Brittany (10-11 January 2018).
Fifty choristers will join the Orchestre Symphonique de Bretagne (OSB) and their chorus, alongside soloists Helen Kearns, Virginie Verrex, Xiveri Moreno and Duncan Rock for two performances of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9. BBC National Chorus of Wales will also perform the Breton anthem Bro Gozh ma Zadoù with OSB – which shares its melody with the national anthem of Wales Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau.
The project is the first collaboration between OSB and BBC National Orchestra and Chorus of Wales, aimed at fostering closer cultural ties between the two Celtic nations. The Chorus have been invited to perform by Welsh conductor Grant Llewellyn, who is the Music Director of OSB and a frequent partner with BBC National Orchestra & Chorus of Wales. The concerts on the 10-11 January will be the inaugural performances at the Couvent des Jacobins (in Rennes, Brittany) a former 14th century convent, which will be the new venue of OSB.
Conductor and Music Director of OSB Grant Llewellyn, says: « For this special occasion we needed a choir, a big choir, and as a Welshman I’m delighted that BBC National Chorus of Wales will be joining us. The Welsh connection is obvious; historically, culturally, linguistically and musically, we even share an anthem! We know the Welsh love to sing, so it is a perfect ‘coming together’ of the two Celtic neighbours, to open our wonderful new home in Rennes. »
Marc Feldman, General Manager, Orchestre Symphonique de Bretagne, says: « I am genuinely happy to welcome BBC National Chorus of Wales for this major event in the life of the orchestra, inaugurating our new venue. I hope this will be the beginning of a long and fruitful musical relationship between our two ensembles, as well as the sign of the deep commitment between Brittany and Wales. »
Michael Garvey, Director, BBC National Orchestra and Chorus of Wales, says: « I’m delighted that members of our chorus will be joining musicians in Brittany for these special concerts. Corws Cenedlaethol Cymreig y BBC yn perfformio gyda’r Orchestre Symphonique de Bretagne
Mae Corws Cenedlaethol Cymreig y BBC yn ymuno am y tro cyntaf â’r Orchestre Symphonique de Bretagne i berfformio yn neuadd gyngerdd newydd y Couvent des Jacobins yn Llydaw, Ffrainc (10 ac 11 Ionawr 2018).
Bydd pum deg o gantorion yn ymuno â’r Orchestre Symphonique de Bretagne (OSB) a’u corws, ynghyd â’r unawdwyr Helen Kearns, Virginie Verrex, Xiveri Moreno a Duncan Rock, a hynny ar gyfer dau berfformiad o Symffoni Rhif 9 Beethoven. Bydd Corws Cenedlaethol Cymreig y BBC yn ymuno â’r OSB i berfformio anthem Llydaw – Bro Gozh ma Zadoù – sef sydd ar yr un alaw â Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau.
Dyma’r cywaith cyntaf rhwng yr OSB a Cherddorfa a Chorws Cenedlaethol Cymreig y BBC, a’r nod yw meithrin cysylltiadau agosach rhwng y ddwy wlad Geltaidd. Gwahoddwyd y Corws i berfformio gan y cyfansoddwr Cymreig Grant Llewellyn, Cyfarwyddwr Cerdd yr OSB a phartner rheolaidd i Gerddorfa a Chorws Cenedlaethol Cymreig y BBC. Hefyd, y cyngherddau yma fydd y perfformiadau cyntaf yn y Couvent des Jacobins (yn Rennes, Llydaw), sef hen leiandy o’r 14eg ganrif a chartref newydd yr OSB.
Dywed yr Arweinydd a Chyfarwyddwr Cerdd yr OSB, Grant Llewellyn: « Mae angen côr mawr ar gyfer yr achlysur arbennig yma. Ac fel Cymro, mae’n bleser mawr i mi fod Corws Cenedlaethol Cymreig y BBC am ymuno â ni. Mae’r cysylltiad Cymreig yn amlwg, a hynny’n hanesyddol, diwylliannol, ieithyddol a cherddorol. Rydyn ni’n rhannu’r un anthem hyd yn oed. Gwyddon ni fod y Cymru’n hoff o ganu, felly dyma ‘uniad’ perffaith i’r cymdogion Celtaidd er mwyn agor ein cartref bendigedig newydd yn Rennes. »
Dywed Marc Feldman, Rheolwr Cyffredinol yr Orchestre Symphonique de Bretagne: « Rwy’n wir yn falch o groesawu Corws Cenedlaethol Cymreig y BBC i’r digwyddiad pwysig hwn yn hanes y gerddorfa, sef agor ein lleoliad newydd. Gobeithio y bydd hyn yn ddechrau i berthynas gerddorol hir a ffrwythlon rhwng ein ensembles, yn ogystal ag yn arwydd o’r cwlwm cryf sy’n bodoli rhwng Llydaw a Chymru. »
