The Welsh Assembly governments Environment Minister has told the Celtic League that "the pursuit of new nuclear energy facilities for Wales is not necessary". Jane Davidson was responding to a query from Celtic League General Secretary, Rhisiart Tal-e-bot.

However it was also confirmed that the Welsh government support the possible operating life extension of Wylfa nuclear power station a move opposed by the Celtic League (see below).

"Jane Davidson AC/AM

Minister for Environment, Sustainability and Housing

15th February 2008

Dear Rhisiart

Thank you for your letter of 21st January in which you asked for the official position of the Welsh Assembly Government on the future of nuclear power in Wales, and on the decommissioning of the Wylfa power station. My officials have been unable to confirm receipt of your previous letter of 13 October.

The view of the Assembly Government is that, with 6.5 billion pounds of high efficiency conventional and renewable energy developments either proposed or underway in Wales and scheduled to come on stream within the next ten to fifteen years, the pursuit of new nuclear energy facilities for Wales is not necessary.

We support seeking extension to Wylfa's operating life whilst alternative sources of power for the nearby Anglesey Aluminium plant are explored.

Yours

Jane Davidson PP"
