When we pressed the RPII (Radiological Protection Institute of Ireland) over its somewhat 'rosy picture' of the safety implications of continued operation of the Wylfa nuclear plant we cited concerns from a number of sources.

One of those sources was John Large, an independent nuclear engineer and analyst primarily known for his work in assessing and reporting upon nuclear safety and nuclear related accidents and incidents.

We passed a copy of the RPII response (posted earlier today on CL News) to John Large and not surprisingly his view does not mirror that of the Institute. He told us:

"I certainly do not agree with a number of the technical issues relating the nuclear safety that the RPII opine on and it seems to misunderstand certain and entirely omit other key nuclear safety issues relating to Wylfa."

However more pertinently he pointed us in the direction of a extremely straightforward presentation he produced recently on nuclear safety concerns of the Oldbury nuclear power station which is very similar in construction, age and operation to the Wylfa plant.

Please note that it is a very large file and could be slow loading if you do not have fast broadband connection. It also requires MS PowerPoint to operate and should be saved as a document and then played in MS PP. However its well worth the effort. Perhaps the RPII should download a copy!
