NEWS FROM THE CELTIC LEAGUE The Council of Europe (CPT), the body which inspects and sets standards for prisons, police stations, and other places of detention in Europe, has written to the Celtic League thanking us for the information we forwarded about the death in custody of Mr Sheku Bayoh at a police station in Scotland in May. In a reply to Francesca Gordon at the CPT Secretariat the League say that as the death is now the subject of a Police Investigations and Review Commissioner (PIRC) inquiry they feel sure the CPT will update itself in relation to this as appropriate. Also on an issue unrelated to the death in Scotland the League has advised the CPT about the death of a young man who had been detained by Manx Police at a hospital in the Isle of Man (a Crown Dependency of the United Kingdom) earlier this week. That death is currently the subject of a Coroners Inquiry although brief details have now been released.
