Despite this month marking the 5th anniversary of the sinking of the Breton 'Bugaled Breizh' fishing trawler, the families of the five fishermen who all drowned are still no nearer to receiving justice.

The Breton Branch of the League reported last week that Judge M. Gehin, who had been presiding over the case to determine the reason why the vessel sunk suddenly off the Lizard peninsula in Kernow/Cornwall on 15th January 2004, decided to call a halt to the investigation. It has been widely speculated that the 'Bugaled Breizh' was sunk by a submarine taking part in NATO exercises in the vicinity, at the time of the sinking. Previous legal investigations have highlighted the discrepancies in the evidence presented by the Royal Navy (UK) in the case, which could suggest, in addition to other evidence, that the vessel had come into contact with a submarine.

In addition to the lengthy court case and investigation, a book was also published in January 2007 exploring the possibility that the vessel had been sunk by a submarine. Then in October 2008 a French television documentary was produced that highlighted the 'Bugaled Breizh' affair and involved an extensive interview with the League's Director of Information, Bernard Moffatt, because of his experience and expertise in these matters.

The families of the deceased fishermen are likely to appeal against the decision to stop the investigation into the sinking and more is likely to be known next month. Meanwhile the Kernow Branch of the League is awaiting the outcome of the trial with the intention of erecting a memorial stone on the Lizard peninsula, near where the Bugaled Breizh sunk.
