The Irish Environment Minister has responded to a query from the Celtic League General Secretary about unauthorised drilling of bore holes in a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) by Shell as part of its controversial Mayo pipeline/gas terminal development.

Rhisiart Tal-e-bot had written to the Minister in early November applauding the efforts of Shell to sea protesters in highlighting the Oil and Gas multinationals illegal activities. See:

He asked Minister Gormley for his views and these are set out below

RE : REP3522/JG/07

Dear Rhisiart Tal-e-bot

I have been asked by the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and local Government, Mr John Gormley, TD to reply to your recent letter about the drilling of bore holes by Shell in Glenamoy Bog Complex.

As the works in question had not been authorized by the Minister as required under the European Communities (natural Habitats) Regulation, 1997, the Minister has issued a ministerial direction under Article 19 requiring the site to be restored by Shell or its agents to its former condition.

No application for ministerial consent for works on this site has been received at the present time.

Yours sincerely

Eddie Kiernan Private Secretary"
