NEWS FROM THE CELTIC LEAGUE The International Atomic Energy Agency has responded to a query from the Celtic League about a fire on a ship carrying nuclear waste off the N E of Scotland last year. The vessel, the MV Parida, was disabled in the fire and was towed into port. The text of the Leagues query to the Director General of the IAEA can be found here: (voir le site) The response from the IAEA is set out below: ?2015-01-27 Dear Mr Moffatt, With reference to your letter of 27th November 2014, addressed to Yukiya Amano, Director General, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), I would like to inform you that the IAEA was aware of the event and, at the time, in contact with our counterparts in Belgium, who were also in contact with counterparts in the United Kingdom. We were informed that no one was injured in the event, and that two packages loaded with three drums of radioactive waste each, suffered no damage. We were also informed that the transport complied with UK and Belgian regulations. This incident had no impact on radiological safety of the public or the environment. If you would like more information on this event we suggest you contact the authorities in the UK at the Nuclear Resilience and Assurance Directorate in the Department of Energy and Climate Change or the authorities in Belgium at the Federal Agency for Nuclear Control. Yours sincerely, Serge Gas Director Office of Public Information and Communication? The League had already written to DECC (see link below) prior to receipt of the IAEA letter and a response is still awaited.
