NEWS FROM THE CELTIC LEAGUE State Commemoration Marks Centenary Since The Funeral of Jeremiah O'Donovan Rossa. A commemoration marking 100 years since the funeral of Jeremiah O'Donovan Rossa in 1915, was held today (August 1) at Dublin's Glasnevin Cemetary. O'Donovan Rossa's funeral is generally regarded as having had a direct link to the 1916 Rising and today's event is the first of the national 2016 commemorative programme. Jeremiah O'Donovan Rossa (10 September 1831 ? 29 June 1915) was an Irish Fenian leader and prominent member of the Irish Republican Brotherhood It was at his funeral on 1 August 1915 that Pádraig Pearse gave the famous oration which ended with words: Ireland unfree shall never be at peace. The oration roused Irish republican feeling and was seen to be a significant factor in the lead-up to the Easter Rising of 1916. When the Easter Rising took place on Easter Monday, 24 April 1916, it was Pádraig Pearse who read the Proclamation of the Irish Republic from outside the General Post Office. He was subsequently murdered by a British firing squad, on the morning of 3 May 1916 at the age of 36 years old for his part in the Rising. At the centenary commemoration and as reported by Irish broadcaster Raidió Teilifís Éireann (RTÉ), a re-enactment of the oration by Pádraig Pearse took place (see link below). Separately, a full scale re-enactment of the funeral, organised by Sinn Féin, took place in the afternoon.
