NEWS FROM THE CELTIC LEAGUE With St Piran?s Day just a month away Mike Chappell of the Kernow branch of the Celtic League has sent us a report on how a number of branch members will be heavily involved in the celebrations in Redruth. The Kernow branch of the Celtic League has been campaigning, with a great measure of success, for almost a decade to get the day recognised as a public holiday. Several local councils have since granted the holiday to their staff. Mike?s report is below together with links (at the celticleague.net archive) to some of the previous campaign work undertaken by the Kernow branch: ?Guide to this year's St Piran's Festival in Redruth goes live Get ready for a sea of black and white Cornish flags as Redruth readies to mark the the Cornish National patron saint of tinners at the 2015 St Piran?s festival. The event will take place on Saturday, March 7, with the parade of hundreds including 'St Piran' himself (played by Tony Leamon AGS Celtic League), local school children, Gorsedh Kernow representatives, local politicians and MPs and Cornish music taking centre stage. The Redruth St Piran's Festival guide has been published online and is also being distributed across the town. Choirs will lead the singing of Trelawny by the town clock at the end of the procession. Redruth Youth Council will be out on the day asking the public how they feel this year?s St Piran?s Festival has gone. There will also be a free children?s town trail to celebrate the ?Brewing up the Past? project capturing the history of the former Redruth Brewery site. Members of the Kernow Branch of the Celtic League resident in and around Redruth in Cornwall are key members of the Redruth Piran Fest Organising Group which is Chaired by the Convener of the Kernow Branch. With the co operation and help of many others in the community including a very enthusiastic town council, Redruth now hosts one of the largest St Piran celebrations in the world, very apt for a town which is termed the 'World Capital of Cornish Mining'. Once the urban centre of the Cornish Mining industry, Redruth is now at the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
