NEWS FROM THE CELTIC LEAGUE The Danish Ambassador has responded to a query from the Celtic League about the incident when the Danish vessel, MV Parida, caught fire and was disabled and drifting off N E Scotland. The vessel was carrying nuclear waste from the Dounreay nuclear plant. The League had asked when the report into the incident (being compiled by Danish authorities) would be made available and if this would be in English. The Celtic League is grateful to the Ambassador?s for his swift response and we also welcome the fact that the Danish MAIB report will be produced so quickly. The question of the safety of nuclear transports by sea in the areas around the Celtic countries is likely to be tabled for discussion at the Celtic League AGM in Dublin in April. A copy of Ambassador Grube?s letter is set out below with our query below that. ?London 24th February 2015 Dear Mr Moffatt, Thank you for your letter of the 18th February 2015 in which you raise a number of questions regarding the incident last year with the Danish Motor Vessel Parida. The embassy has been in contact with the Maritime Accident Investigation Branch, which states that the investigation into this affair is still ongoing. The publication of the final accident investigation report is expected to be published within the next two months, and will be available in English on the Board?s website. (voir le site) I hope this answers your enquiry. Should you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact the embassy. Yours sincerely, Claus Grube Ambassador? Text of our query: ?The Ambassador Claus Grube Royal Danish Embassy 55 Sloane Street London SW1X 9SR England 18th February 2015 Dear Ambassador Grube, I draw your attention a response we received recently from the United Kingdom government (MCA) in relation to an incident in the North Sea (off N E Scotland) last year when the Danish Motor Vessel Parida was disabled and drifting for a period following an onboard fire. The vessel was carrying nuclear waste and I see from the MCA letter that Danish authorities are carrying out an enquiry into the affair and an accident report is to be compiled. Could I ask if an English language version of this report will be available and if so how we can access same? I trust that your government would agree that for a vessel (to use the MCA correspondence) which ?was fully compliant in this respect and had a valid Document of Compliance for the Carriage of Dangerous Goods and an International Certificate of Fitness for the carriage of Packaged Nuclear Fuel? to be involved in such a serious incident is alarming? For information; The Celtic League has also raised concerns over this issue with the IAEA. Yours sincerely, J B Moffatt (Mr) Director of Information?
