NEWS FROM THE CELTIC LEAGUE Following queries to the Isle of Man government about conditions for seafarers on Manx registered vessels the League has followed up with queries on the issue with the International Maritime Organisation. The League say that although the ILO (who they also intend to lobby) is responsible for Labour Standards the most recent Convention set by that body (the ILO) has inherent weaknesses and they ask if the IMO has raised the matter with either the ILO directly or with the Secretary General of the United Nations ?The Secretary-General Mr. Koji Sekimizu International Maritime Organisation 4 Albert Embankment London SE1 7SR 12th July 2015 Dear Secretary General Sekimizu, I draw your attention to the attached correspondence to the Isle of Man government about crew conditions of seafarers sailing on vessels on the same questions could be posed to a range of governments globally. I am aware that the body to set International labour standards is the ILO and I am aware that they introduced the Maritime Labour Convention in 2006 which has now been adopted by a wide range of governments with shipping registers. We will of course be writing to the ILO about this legislation but given that it has attracted from day one criticism for the weaknesses inherent in it I wondered if the IMO had expressed any reservations to either the ILO or the Secretary General of the United Nations about its shortcomings. Notwithstanding the ILOs brief, the conditions under which crews work must be a major imperative in terms of maritime safety and therefore I would suggest it is an area the IMO should take an interest in - if it has not already done so. Manx register. Yours sincerely Director of Information Celtic League?
