NEWS FROM THE CELTIC LEAGUE The Celtic League has written to the Director General of the IAEA asking what steps (if any) it will take following a hazardous incident last month when a ship carrying hazardous nuclear waste caught fire while on passage from Dounreay to Belgium. The League has specifically asked if the vessel involved complied with both IAEA and IMO regulations for vessels used in the shipment of nuclear material. Text of the letter below: ?The Director General IAEA Mr Yukiya Amano Vienna International Centre PO Box 100 Vienna 1400 Austria. 27/11/14 Dear Director General Amano, I write to express concern about the incident last month in which a vessel carrying nuclear contaminated waster from Dounreay in Scotland to Belgium caught fire and drifted out of control for sometime off the north east of Scotland. Can I ask if the IAEA will be enquiring into this incident? Can I also ask if the vessel involved the MV Parida was in the view of the IAEA a vessel suitable for the carriage of nuclear waste and if its operation in this role complied with both IAEA and IMO standards? Finally, following this incident will the IAEA and the IMO be reviewing the regulation surrounding the carriage of nuclear contaminated material in busy seaways? Yours sincerely, J B Moffatt (Mr) Director of Information?
