Le 12 juillet prochain à l'auberge du Cleuziou en Arzano (Finistère), la Gorsedd, Fraternité des Druides, Bardes et Ovates de Bretagne, fêtera le 110e anniversaire de sa fondation en présence de délégués du Pays de Galles et de Cornouailles britannique dès 11 heures.
C'est à cette occasion qu'elle mettra à l'honneur l'Archidruide de Galles, Hwfa Môn et Thomas Paine.
C'est en effet en juillet 1899 que la Gorsedd a obtenu la reconnaissance de l'Archidruide de Galles, Hwfa Môn (prononcez Houva Mone). Un poème écrit par Hwfa Môn sera lu le 12 juillet par le représentant de Galles dans le cercle de la Gorsedd.
Depuis 1899 le rite de l'Union de l'Epée symbolisant les retrouvailles des peuples celtiques de chaque côté de la mer est célébré lors du Gorsedd Digor, cérémonie publique annuelle. Ce rite devient central dans les Gorsedd cette année car il va être réalisé également en Cornouailles britannique en septembre pour la première fois. Ce rite, inspiré par le poète Lamartine, atteste de la contribution des Gorsedd à la construction d'une Europe unie et pacifique.
Mais cette année est également celle du bicentenaire de la mort de Thomas Paine (1737-1809), un authentique « citoyen du monde » (il fut en effet citoyen anglais, américain et français !)
Admirateur de la Révolution française, Paine écrivit pour sa défense contre les réactionnaires britanniques « The Rights of Man » (Les Droits de l'Homme) publié en 1792. Critiquant la monarchie britannique, il sera contraint de s'exiler aux États-Unis où il soutiendra les Insurgents dans un pamphlet célèbre qui inspira Washington, Benjamin Rush et John Adams. Revenu en 1787 en Angleterre, il s'embarqua alors pour la France où il s'engagea en faveur de la République.
Proclamé citoyen français le 24 août 1792, il fut élu député du Pas-de-Calais à la Convention le 6 septembre 1792. Incarcéré sous la Terreur, on lui reprocha ses sympathies pour les Girondins et ses origines anglaises. Il retournera finir sa vie aux Etats-Unis.
Ami de Iolo Morgannwg, le fondateur de la Gorsedd de Galles en 1792, Thomas Paine connaissait le druidisme dans lequel il voit l'origine véritable de la Franc maçonnerie. Dans son ouvrage posthume sur ce sujet, il en a compris, avant tout autre, le caractère universaliste.
Barack Obama, dans son discours d'investiture en janvier dernier s'est référé à l'action de Thomas Paine qui fut un des pères fondateurs de l'Amérique, l'auteur du nom même d' « Etats unis » et un ardent anti-esclavagiste
Le 200e anniversaire de sa mort, comme le remarque le quotidien The Guardian du 9 juin 2009, est étrangement passé sous silence dans les médias britanniques. La France ne semble guère partie pour faire mieux.
Une lourde injustice que la Gorsedd de Bretagne s'attachera à réparer le 12 juillet à Arzano.

ARZANO, 12th of July : The Gorsedd celebrates its 110 years !
The next 12th of July at “l’Auberge du Cleuziou in Arzano (Finistère) The Gorsedd of Brittany, attended by the Delegates of Wales and Cornwall, will celebrate the 110th Anniversary of its foundation.
In fact, it was in July 1899 that the Archidruid of Wales (Hwfa Mön) admitted and recognised the Gorsedd of Brittany.
In this respect, one delegate of Wales will read a poem in the circle of the Gorsedd.
Since 1899, the ritual of “the united sword” , has been celebrated at the ceremony of the Gorsedd Digor (annual Public ceremony).
The “united sword» is the symbol of bringing the Celtic people together from each side of the sea.
The ritual gets focussed in all the Gorsedd, and this year , for the 1st time, in September, it will be celebrated in Cornwall.
Fully inspired by the poet “Lamartine”, the ritual proves that the Gorsedd has always been involved in the building of the pacific and united Europe.
But this year, it’s also the Thomas Paine’s death be-centenary anniversary
A “strong citizen of the world” (in fact, he was an American, English, French citizen) !
Paine was full of admiration for the French Revolution and wrote for his defence against the British reactionaries “ the Rights of Man” published in 1792.
Criticizing the British Monarchy, he was banished from the country to USA,
where he supported the “insurgents” in a famous brochure which gave inspiration to Washington, Benjamin Rush and John Adams.
After his Return to England in 1787, he went back to France and got involved in the fight for the Republic.
Proclaimed as a French citizen on the 24th of August 1792, he was elected MP of “Pas de Calais” at the “Convention” on the 6th September 1792.
Sent in Jail under the “Terreur”, he was blamed for his English birth and his close friendship with “the Girondins”.
He went back to the United states to end his life.
Friend to Iolo Morgannwg, founder of the Gorsedd of Wales in 1792, Thomas Paine knew very well the Druidism in which he sees the real beginning of the “freemasonry”.
First of all, in his posthumous book, regarding this matter , he made out the “universalistic” character”

The daily newspaper “the Guardian» reports that surprisingly the British medias kept under silence the be-centenary anniversary of his death, regarding France, she doesn’t seem doing better.
In Arzano, on the next 12th of July, the Gorsedd of Brittany promises to atone for this severe unfairness
