NEWS FROM THE CELTIC LEAGUE One aspect of the many and varied roles of the Celtic League is our opposition to militarism and specifically recruitment from the Celtic countries into the British and French armed forces and also the British military cadet forces. I only wish the Celtic League had enough time and resources to address this area more thoroughly but with finite resources we can only do so much. Fortunately there is a body FORCESWATCH, which is 100% devoted to a broadly similar agenda and over the past couple of years we have had a liaison with them and have come to appreciate the well researched and determined manner in which they monitor militarisation of young people. Our liaison with Forces Watch has been via there Education Support Officer, Owen Everett, who keeps us up to date with the groups work (despite on occasion having to wait a while for a response from us because of the League other pressing preoccupations.) There?s a Youtube video of Owen in action delivering the Forceswatch message at this link. His message about armed forces visits to schools in Scotland is particularly relevant to our Celtic countries agenda but the broad remit of Forceswatch address the issue of militarisation across Britain . They publish a wide range of reports on their website and the most recent one we have received contains an interesting analysis of one young mans experience in the Combined Cadet Forces (link here). Forceswatch are currently expanding their operations and hope to appoint a part time ?Parliamentary and Media Worker? in the London area. They are funded by donations and are well worth supporting. Details about donating can be found on their web pages. We hope that in the coming weeks Forceswatch will echo the concerns Celtic League have already aired to the UN Committee of the Rights of The Child about UK military cadet forces.
