Plaid's education spokesperson, Nerys Evans AM, launching the Count on Plaid Programme, explained that it aims to build on the success of the foundation phase by specifically driving forward standards and achievement for children aged 8-13. Plaid Cymru has set out education as one of its main election campaign themes, saying that the future of Wales, and specifically its economic recovery, has to be based on making education the central plank of government. Ms Evans added that tackling the basics of reading, writing and counting will be essential to enabling future generations to create a strong and prosperous economy. Plaid Cymru's Education spokesperson and candidate for Carmarthen West and South Pembrokeshire, Nerys Evans AM said: Plaid Cymru wants to make 2011 the year that we set Wales on a new course. We want to transform our education system and our children's future. Wales needs, and deserves, a world class education system and that is at the heart of the thinking behind our Count on Plaid programme. We will be putting forward radical ideas that encourage fresh thinking outside the traditional classroom experience. For Plaid Cymru there are no areas that we are not willing to look at in order to improve the education system in Wales. These proposals will offer exciting and innovative ways of creating an education system based on developing a generation of people in Wales that is more qualified, more able and more determined than ever before. This new approach will revolutionise education in Wales. We know that the economy and education go hand in hand and our election campaign is based around Wales becoming a world leader in both. We will be outlining specific proposals over the coming weeks to highlight how Plaid will be leading the way in developing an education system that will raise standards and improve performance for all our children.
