There has been an outbreak of French xenophobia in South-Eastern Brittany with road signs and other notices in the Breton language being defaced.

The activity appears to be confined to the Naoned/Nantes (Loire-Atlantique area) which was annexed from the Breton region in 1941. The issue of the re-unification of this area with the rest of Brittany has been contentious for many years.

The Celtic League has periodically at its AGMs called for the re-integration of Loire-Atlantique with the presently defined Breton Region as a precursor to full independence for Brittany.

French police seem unable or unwilling to track down the culprits (making it difficult to determine if this French racism is being orchestrated by any particular political party). In addition little attempt is being made to rectify the damage to the Breton signage. One can only speculate if the authorities would be so dilatory if it was the French language signs which were being defaced.
