For advocates of the Breton language, the possibility of taking a specialized exam in Breton represents an important symbolic advancement. It could also enhance the appeal of bilingual and immersive programs in high school.

Starting from the 2028 session of the baccalaureate, high school students who have taken a regional language specialty will be able to take the corresponding exam in that language. The announcement was made by the Minister of National Education, Édouard Geffray, in an interview with Ouest-France, relayed by AFP on Sunday, May 24.

Until now, even when a student took a full specialty in a regional language in an immersive or bilingual institution, the baccalaureate exam had to be written in French, unless the regional language itself was the specialty. This situation had long been criticized by networks of immersive education such as Diwan, Seaska, or Calandreta.

This development marks a new step in the institutional recognition of regional languages within the National Education system. It comes just days after the minister's announcements before the Regional Languages and Cultures study group of the National Assembly, where he mentioned the creation of a new regulatory framework aimed at removing immersive institutions from the derogatory regime.

The ministry has not yet specified which specialties will be affected or the exact implementation modalities for each regional language. The measure is set to take effect for the 2028 session of the baccalaureate.
