NEWS FROM THE CELTIC LEAGUE The 1916 Easter Rising has almost always been documented as a unique episode in Irish history with its wider implications marginalised certainly in the British media. The Rising has also tended to be seen, outside of Ireland in England, as either a ?betrayal? taking place as it did at the height of the great war, or to some in the other Celtic countries with resentment that Ireland had done what others had not the temerity to do: throw off the yoke of English domination. Now to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the Rising a new documentary will set out to give the event the huge significance it had, not just in terms of Anglo-Irish relations, but in the broader context of the ultimate establishment of the modern Irish State and also the disintegration of not just the British Empire but the Empires of the other Great Powers. Millions of people globally owe the freedom that they now enjoy to the events that were set in train by a few thousand men on the streets of Dublin in 1916. The new documentary will be narrated by the renowned Irish actor Liam Neeson. The background to its inception, funding, and the manner in which it will be rolled out is set out in the attached article in the Irish Times. The article says: ?the purpose of the documentary is to show how the Easter Rising was not only a pivotal event in 20th century Ireland, but also an event of international importance?. The Rising was a major event for modern Ireland and an equally major event for the many people held in bondage by the large European Nation States for so long who saw that a people right at England?s back door had broken the shackles of Empire!
