NEWS FROM THE CELTIC LEAGUE Hardly a day goes by on the Isle of Man without new charges or costs being laid off by Central government on the general populace. Children now are charged to travel on school buses with similar charging mooted for pensioners. Tenants of social housing have seen their rents rise far above inflation. Private housing is to be ?revalued? as the Isle of Man government strives to come up with its version of the poll tax. Government have even introduced a ?toilet tax? and the wholesale privatisation of public services is in full swing. Post Offices are to close and have there services shunted into the backend of convenience stores. In the latest twist it seems not even the ?lollipop men? (and women) will be safe from the privatisation bandwagon. School library services and nursery services were the first easy targets over two years ago. As if that?s not bad enough earlier this week the Treasury Minister was asking for outside help to ?come up with ideas? to resolve the fiscal crisis. But never fear the Islands Tynwald has its priorities right. This week it was announced that the Office of the Clerk of Tynwald has appointed two military liaison officers to help in ?preserving and developing our National Day? So there you have it ? forget the taxes, the charges, the privatisations the endless political duplicity at least the ?military pantomime? on Tynwald Day will be secure. You could not make it up!
