Plaid Cymru Deputy Leader sets out vision of Wales as world leader in sustainable development In a keynote address to a major sustainability conference today, Plaid Cymru Deputy Leader Jill Evans MEP set out a vision of Wales as a world leader in sustainable development. The all-Wales Euro-MP, a member of the European Parliament's Environment and Employment committees, said that through continuing to harness and encourage specialist skills in sustainability, Wales would cement its place as a world leader in the field of sustainable development. The 'Sustainable Development: Putting Wales First' conference, held at Bangor University, was organised by the Wales SCEnE project - a two year initiative aimed at identifying best practice in sustainable development in organisations across the sectors, helping them develop sustainability strategies. Jill Evans MEP said, "We in Wales have taken the concept of sustainable development to our hearts in a way that simply hasn't happened elsewhere and this is something of which we should be tremendously proud. I believe that out passion for our natural environment, our countryside, our communities, our rich and diverse linguistic and cultural heritage and our appreciation of their fragility have given us an unique understanding of the concept of sustainability. "For us it is not just an abstract concept, it means taking care of the features of our society that are most precious when faced with the challenges of globalisation; but it is about more than preservation - we are using sustainable development as a tool for economic success. "I regularly cite examples from Wales when I speak on this subject at the EU level - yet people continue to be surprised that we are unique amongst all of the EU nations in having a government that is duty bound to take account of sustainable development in all of its key decisions. "We have so much to offer on a global level. This conference and the work of the SCEnE project highlights much of the best on offer in sustainable development in action - practical examples of how organisations and wider society benefit from putting the theory of sustainability into practice. We are building a more sustainable future for our country - now let us help promote a more sustainable future on a much wider stage, celebrating our excellence in this field".
