GUEST : WALES
Next year’s guest nation is Wales, and yesterday their official delegate, Antwn Owen Hicks, gave us his thoughts on the current situation and what it augurs for the future, both in Wales and in Brittany. It will have been exactly ten years since Wales was last the guest of honour at the festival, back in 2008. At that time, Antwn told us that 40% of under-16s spoke Welsh then (20% of adults) and confidently assures us that it’s probably nearer 50% now. Here in Brittany, we’re doing our very utmost, but we’re a long, long way behind! Surprisingly, the tables are turned when it comes to the music scene : young Welsh musicians and groups – all Welsh-speakers, naturally - come to the Festival and express their admiration at the lively music scene over here. Compare the Festival to the National Eisteddfod, where Welsh is the only language used. How much Breton have you seen and/or heard this year in Lorient ?
