NEWS FROM THE CELTIC LEAGUE ?The Army realised a long time ago that a gullible media produced a compliant public that was ?on message?!? With Military matters much to the fore of late I thought it best to adopt the old adage ?know your enemy?, so I settled down for an evening's reading with a few good books. First and essential reading if you want to understand the thought processes that drive all British military thinking is (Sir) Frank Kitson?s (Brigadier - later General) seminal work Low Intensity Operations. It is the British Army ?Bible? and if Frank was not still alive he would be their God! Kitson got a mention in the assessment I did following the British-Irish military agreement (see link). I moved on via Frank Holroyd?s War without Honour to the work of Colin Wallace who was a Psych-Ops Officer in Ireland and specialised in manipulating the media and ensuring they did and said just exactly what the Army wanted. Wallace was excellent at his jobuntil he fell out with the MOD - then they turned on him! The Army realised a long time ago that a gullible media produced a compliant public that was ?on message?! Of course main stream media manipulation by the military is not sufficient in an age of Social media so I was not surprised to learn that recently the British Army set up what a UK National newspaper called: ?a special force of Facebook warriors, skilled in psychological operations and use of social media.? This is no ad hoc operation, the paper went on: ?The..Brigade, to be based in Hermitage, near Newbury, in Berkshire , will be about 1,500-strong and formed of units drawn from across the army. It will formally come into being in April.? ?Against a background of 24-hour news, smartphones and social media, such as Facebook and Twitter, the force will attempt to control the narrative.? The new outfit it was also revealed ?will include reservists?. So any computer savvy folk who are not turned on by the macho, gun toting, quad riding, rock climbing ?fun? message projected so far to budding reservists should get themselves along to the British Army's ongoing pantomime on Douglas promenade.
